We love essential oils—they’re powerful, natural, and can offer incredible support for the body, mind, and spirit. But one thing we don’t do at Alma Naturals? Add essential oils to our drinking water.
Let’s talk about why.
Essential Oils and Water Don’t Mix
Essential oils are highly concentrated, hydrophobic substances—which means they don’t dissolve in water. When you add a drop to a glass or bottle, it floats on top or clings to the sides, not dispersing evenly. That means every sip you take could be delivering a mini oil bomb directly to your sensitive internal tissues.
This isn’t just ineffective—it can be dangerous.
The Risks You Should Know
Even “safe” oils like lemon or peppermint can cause real harm when used incorrectly:
Mouth and throat irritation: Undiluted oils can burn delicate mucous membranes.
Esophageal damage: Long-term use can irritate or erode the lining of the esophagus.
Liver and kidney stress: These organs work hard to process everything we consume. Concentrated oils can overwhelm them.
Medication interactions: Some oils can affect how medications are metabolized.
And here's a big one: just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe to ingest—especially without proper guidance. Also - sorry to break it to the MLM reps - brand doesn't magically make it safe to ingest. In fact, the more pure it is, the more likely it is to cause problems. The only benefit to drinking your oils is to the person you are buying them from. You will go through your little bottle much faster this way, and then have to buy more. Great marketing scheme, right?
But I Heard Lemon Oil Is Great in Water…
We get it—there’s a lot of advice floating around social media (and even from some reps) suggesting a few drops of citrus oil in your water is a great detox. But here’s the truth: fresh lemon juice in water gives you all the benefits without the risks. You get the flavor, vitamin C, and hydration—without stressing your system.
Our Stance at Alma Naturals
We’re here for safe, effective wellness. That’s why we encourage topical, aromatic, and diffuser use for most essential oils, where they can do the most good with the least risk. If you’re working with a qualified aromatherapist or physician and have been advised to use oils internally under supervision, that’s a different conversation. But for general daily use, we say: keep the oils out of your cup. We will gladly lose a sale in the interest of safely.
Better Ways to Enjoy Your Oils Daily:
Diffuse them. Aromatherapy works fast and is incredibly effective.
Roll them on. Diluted blends make it easy to carry benefits with you.
Add to baths(with a dispersant or our bath & body oil), lotions, or body oils. Perfect for self-care and targeted relief.
Scent your space. Sprays, dryer balls, and even vacuum filters love a drop or two.
Natural wellness is powerful—but it should always be safe.
